Record your screen.Edit it like it'sstill live.

Ash Studio Recorder captures raw screen, camera, mic and every cursor event separately — then rebuilds the frame live in the editor. Zoom, cursor, backgrounds and face cam stay editable forever, because nothing is ever baked into the video.

macOS (Apple Silicon) build available now · installers aren't code-signed yet, see first-launch steps.

The core idea

Never bake effects during recording.

Save raw data, then replay and render it. Every zoom, every cursor flourish, every background is computed from metadata — never burned into a pixel until you export.

01

Record

Raw screen video, raw webcam video, and independent microphone and system-audio tracks. An event log stores mouse position, clicks, scroll, keystrokes, window bounds and timestamps alongside them.

02

Edit

The project file references the raw media and stores every editor decision. The editor rebuilds the frame live on a canvas from raw data plus your settings — nothing is pre-rendered, so every effect stays editable.

03

Export

Export renders that same canvas frame by frame and encodes it with FFmpeg. Preview and export share one renderer, so what you see while editing is exactly what you get.

Re-recording is never required to change a zoom or a background.
Preview and export share one renderer, so what you see is what you get.
Projects stay small and portable — it's metadata plus raw clips, not a rendered master.
New effects can be added without touching the capture pipeline at all.
Everything, in detail

What it actually does today.

Grouped straight from the project's own roadmap — including what's only partly done, not just the highlight reel.

Capture

Done

Full display, single-window or multi-monitor capture, with camera, microphone and system audio as independent tracks.

  • Display, window and multi-monitor selection with a live preview
  • Separate webcam, microphone and system-audio tracks (system audio on Windows)
  • Crash-safe chunked writes, recovery, and stop-and-save
  • Global cursor, click, scroll and keystroke tracking for later replay

Auto zoom & cursor

Done

Zoom and cursor styling are computed from the event log, not recorded video.

  • Automatic zoom from click clusters, with spring easing
  • Follow-cursor camera plus fully manual zoom segments and sensitivity
  • Cursor smoothing, size, click ripples and highlight
  • Keystroke overlay, driven by the optional key-code log

Backgrounds & face cam

Partly done

Frame the recording like a produced clip — padding, shape, shadow, camera.

  • Solid and gradient backgrounds, padding, corner radius, shadow
  • Aspect-ratio presets, including a 9:16 vertical reframe
  • Face cam shapes, position, size, mirroring and border
  • Face cam auto-hide while zoomed — background blur/removal is not in yet

Timeline editor

Done

A conventional non-destructive timeline over the raw capture.

  • Trim, split, delete and speed ramps
  • Undo and redo across the whole session
  • Idle speed-up for dead air between actions
  • Waveform, microphone volume and audio fades

Export

Done

Frame-accurate export through the same renderer used for preview.

  • MP4, WebM and GIF, at configurable resolutions
  • 30 or 60 fps, with progress and cancel
  • Optional hardware-accelerated encoding
  • GIF export has no palette pass yet

Permissions & privacy

Nothing leaves your computer.

The app makes no internet connections. No account, no upload, no analytics — recordings are folders on your own disk, start to finish.

Screen recordingRequired

Captures your display or a single window. Without this there is nothing to edit.

AccessibilityRequired

Tracks cursor position, clicks and scrolls so the editor can replay them.

CameraOptional

Optional. Records a face cam that you can shape and place in the editor.

MicrophoneOptional

Optional. Records narration on its own audio track.

  • No account, no upload, no analytics. The app makes no internet connections — links you click open in your browser.
  • Only what you choose is recorded: one display or window, plus camera and microphone when you turn them on.
  • Cursor position and clicks are recorded while you record, so the editor can draw the cursor and compute zoom.
  • Keystrokes are off by default. When enabled, only key codes are saved for the keyboard overlay — nothing is monitored while the option is off.
  • Logs contain warnings and errors only, never screen content, and stay on your machine.

First launch on macOS

  1. 1Open the .dmg and drag Ash Studio Recorder into Applications — don't run it from inside the .dmg.
  2. 2Open the app. macOS blocks it the first time since this pre-release isn't signed with a paid certificate yet — click "Done", not "Move to Trash".
  3. 3Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click "Open Anyway" next to Ash Studio Recorder.

Or run once in Terminal:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Ash Studio Recorder.app"

First launch on Windows

Windows SmartScreen may warn that the app isn't code-signed yet. Click "More info", then "Run anyway".

Questions

Good to know.

Is it free?

Yes. Ash Studio Recorder is open source under the MIT license — free to use, read and modify.

Is it ready to use?

It's pre-alpha. Recording, the project library, the editor and export all work end to end. Some items are still open. Builds aren't code-signed yet, so both macOS and Windows show a one-time security prompt on first launch.

Does it upload my recordings anywhere?

No. The app makes no internet connections. Everything — raw clips, the project file, exports — stays as folders on your own disk.

What platforms does it support?

macOS 13+ (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows 10/11. A Linux fallback exists but isn't a target yet.

Why record raw clips instead of baking in effects?

So zoom, cursor, backgrounds and face cam stay editable forever. Nothing is pre-rendered during capture — the editor and the exporter both read the same raw media and event log.

Can I contribute?

Yes — it's open source and contributions are welcome. Read CONTRIBUTING.md in the repository first.

Try it. Keep every pixel on your machine.
